DIGIPAK
Digipak conventions summary loops media from LouisHodges3
A Digipak is a patented style of CD or DVD packaging that consists of a gatefold paper or cardboard outer binding with a plastic tray attached inside. When CDs were the mass market, Digipaks were the preferred choice of CD packaging for most major-label artists as they made the artist look relevant and current in the industry. The paper feel of it gave the nostalgic feeling of vinyl which opened a market to an older audience. Digipaks aren't as popular nowadays due to the easy access of music online, whether it's a free platform like YouTube, or a subscription paid streaming platform, like Apple Music. Digipaks make the CD look professional without the bulk of a plastic jewel case.
KEY ELEMENTS OF A DIGIPAK
- Name of artist/band
- Name of album
- Track listing
- Price
- Bonus material
- Website
- Credits
- Recording material, producer, when and where it was recorded, who wrote the songs and thanks.
Here you can see the difference between a Digipak and a plastic jewel case. The Digipak in this picture has 8 panels (which isn't necessarily always the case), whereas the plastic jewel case only has 4 panels.
Billie Eilish has a 6-panel Digipak as well as numerous vinyls and a cassette tape.
GENERAL CONVENTIONS
In this vodcast, I explore the general conventions of a Digipak. I look at a wide range of artists from different genres and eras. The conventions I go into include, what a Digipak is, the artist name or logo, the album title, track listing, editions, bonuses and extras, the small print, barcodes, external panels link, inner panels flow and the spine.
GENRE CONVENTIONS
LORDE - PURE HEROINE (2013)
BILLIE EILISH - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP WHERE DO WE GO? (2019)
CHARLI XCX - CHARLI (2019)
LOOPS MEDIA'S RESEARCH
VOD: panels mistake; rectangular rear; SPECIFIC vinyl-like point.
ReplyDeleteAn LP/a record, not a vinyl (on vinyl, the vinyl)
030: an unwrapping vid would better make point. 035 - makes no sense! BUT do use it to show the like-vinyl point!!
Not "vinyls" - LPs/records
Track listing: you could consider range of layout options too - eg see LHs Sabbath eg
BONUS: eg you highlight includes a review snippet; note the details of whats on there
Nice keyframing/arrows!
any eg of QR code?
Rihanna is eg of 6 panels: pop that pic in where you say thats common
From here - if LH hasn't done a vodcast too, he shouldn't. Just combine (or he leads) to do a KEY INFLUENCES joint vod
